This booklet was produced by the then College of Ripon and York St John to mark the 175th anniversary of the foundation of the National Society for Promoting the Education of the poor in the Principles of the Established Church. The National Society and the Diocesan Society aimed to establish a National School in each parish. The booklet gives a detailed historical account of the development of these schools in Yorkshire, including the training of teachers.
