Our fieldtrip to Lower Winskill Farm, north of Settle, on Sunday 17th June was a truly memorable occasion. Owner, Tom Lord, showed us around the farm, which is set in a stunning landscape of limestone pavements and hay meadows, with views over the Ribble Valley and towards Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. We were bowled over by the rich hay meadows, where yellow rattle keeps the coarser grasses in check and produces a colourful, diverse sward, including buttercups, rockrose, early purple orchids, pignut and cowslips. Tom’s special expertise is in the history of drystone walls.  He was able to demonstrate the difference between narrow top and wide top walls and introduce us to bield walls, built to provide shelter for stock.
