Buck Wood visit

Posted on

Our final fieldtrip of 2011 took place on Saturday 1st October in unexpectedly glorious weather!  The group assembled in the Methodist Church Room in Thackley in the morning for fascinating talks by Dr Eileen White and Dr Christine Alvin on the history and ecology of Buck Wood and the former open air school located there.  In the afternoon, we enjoyed a stroll through the woodland, seeing the site of the open air school, orthostat walling, a prehistoric enclosure, cup-and-ring stones and modern rock art.  We then walked down to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and witnessed a boat going up the staircase lock.  Finally, we saw the site of the former mill beside the River Wharfe, before climbing back up the hill to our starting point.  Many thanks to Eileen White for arranging such an interesting programme and to Christine and Norman Alvin for their help. An account of the visit will appear in the next newsletter.  Meanwhile, here are some images of the outing.
